Vivid Walls vs Backdrop
Two native Mac live wallpaper apps with very different philosophies. Here is when to pick which.
The 30-second answer: If you already own a Wallpaper Engine library on Steam and want to use those scenes on your Mac, pick Vivid Walls. It is the only Mac app that runs the actual scene format. If you do not own a Wallpaper Engine library and you want a polished, curated, very battery-efficient set of 4K video and Rive scenes, pick Backdrop.
What each one is, exactly
Vivid Walls
Vivid Walls is a native macOS app that reads and plays Wallpaper Engine scene files (.pkg / .scene) on Apple Silicon. It's an independent Mac app, not a virtual machine, that plays the same scene format that Wallpaper Engine uses on Windows: real-time particle effects, visual effects, audio-reactive effects, and animated characters. A free Windows companion app transfers an existing Steam Wallpaper Engine library to the Mac over local Wi-Fi using a 4-character code. $9.99 one-time on the Mac App Store.
Backdrop (Cindori)
Backdrop is a native macOS app that ships a curated library of 4K video and Rive (interactive vector animation) scenes. The library is built and maintained by the Cindori team. It is highly polished and very battery-efficient (Cindori reports CPU usage as low as 0.3% on Apple Silicon). It does not open external scene files; the user is limited to the built-in library. Sold as a one-time purchase or as part of the Cindori subscription bundle.

When Vivid Walls wins
- You own Wallpaper Engine on Steam and have an existing scene library you want on your Mac. This is the main use case nothing else solves.
- You want access to the Steam Workshop's hundreds of thousands of community-created scenes. (Subscribe on Steam, transfer via the companion.)
- You want anime, character, or fully animated wallpapers that the major Mac live wallpaper aggregator-style apps don't carry.
- You want web wallpapers (interactive HTML/CSS/JS dashboards, particle effects, clock widgets) running on your desktop.
When Backdrop wins
- You do not have a Wallpaper Engine library and don't intend to build one. You just want a polished live wallpaper experience out of the box.
- Battery life is your top priority and you want the lowest possible idle CPU. Cindori has invested heavily in the rendering pipeline; their numbers are excellent.
- You prefer curated quality over breadth. Backdrop's library is smaller but professionally produced.
- You're already in the Cindori subscription ecosystem (also covers Aerial, etc.) and want everything in one bundle.
Common questions
Can I use both?
Yes. They are independent apps and don't conflict. Some users keep Backdrop for curated 4K videos and Vivid Walls for their Wallpaper Engine library and Steam Workshop scenes. Each app manages its own desktop window; whichever applied last is what's visible.
Does Vivid Walls work without a Steam library?
Yes. The first time you open Vivid Walls it installs eight animated 1080p wallpapers into your library: City Lights, Aurora Scene, Beach Scene, Cherry Blossom, Fireplace HD, Nebula Journey, Rainy Street and Dense Forest. You can also add your own files in MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, GIF, PNG, JPEG, HEIC and WebP. None of that needs a Windows PC or a Steam account. You can subscribe to Wallpaper Engine on Steam later and transfer that library at any time.
Is Backdrop's curated library larger than what Vivid Walls can access?
No. Wallpaper Engine's Steam Workshop has hundreds of thousands of scenes. Backdrop's curated library has dozens. They're optimized for different things: Backdrop for quality and integration, Vivid Walls for breadth and importing.
Which is faster to set up?
Backdrop is faster on day one: install, pick from the library, done. Vivid Walls requires the additional step of installing the Windows companion and transferring your library, which takes about 5 minutes for most libraries. After that initial setup, both are equivalently fast to use.
