Does Live Wallpaper Work on macOS Monterey?
Vivid Walls requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, so it does not run on macOS Monterey. Here is what that means and how to check your options.
No, not directly: Vivid Walls requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, and Monterey is macOS 12, two releases earlier. If your specific Mac can still take a software update past Monterey, updating to Sonoma or later is what unlocks it. If Software Update stops at Monterey for that machine, Vivid Walls will not install or run there.
Why Vivid Walls doesn't run on Monterey
Vivid Walls plays real Wallpaper Engine scene files natively on Mac using a Metal-based renderer, and that renderer is built against macOS 14 Sonoma and later. Monterey is macOS 12, two major releases earlier, so the app cannot install or launch on a Mac that hasn't been updated past it. This is a floor set by the renderer itself, not a restriction tied to one Mac model. Wallpaper Engine for Mac covers why the original Wallpaper Engine never ran on a Mac in the first place, Monterey or otherwise.
Check whether your Mac can update past Monterey
Open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, then Software Update, and macOS will show the newest version available for that specific machine. If Sonoma or a later release appears, updating clears the only blocker between that Mac and Vivid Walls. If the update pane stops at Monterey or an older version, that Mac has already reached the newest macOS Apple offers it.
If your Mac is stuck on Monterey
A Mac that can't update past Monterey can't run Vivid Walls, and there is no workaround for that inside macOS itself. The Wallpaper Engine library on Steam still needs Windows to actually render scenes, so a separate Windows PC remains the only way to view those animated wallpapers while that Mac stays on Monterey. Once the Mac is replaced or updated to Sonoma or later, the same library can move over instead of being bought again.
Vivid Walls is live on the Mac App Store. Free to download, 3-day trial, then $9.99 once to unlock the full library. The Windows Companion is free.
Frequently asked questions
What macOS version is Monterey?
Monterey is macOS 12, released in 2021. It comes before Ventura (13), Sonoma (14), Sequoia (15) and Tahoe, and Vivid Walls needs Sonoma or later to run.
Is there any way to run Wallpaper Engine scenes on a Mac stuck on Monterey?
Not on that Mac directly. Vivid Walls needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later, so a Mac that can't update past Monterey can't run it, and the original Wallpaper Engine app has never had a Mac version to fall back on either.
If I do update my Mac to Sonoma, do I need to buy Wallpaper Engine again?
No. Vivid Walls reads the same .pkg and .scene file format Wallpaper Engine uses, and its free Windows companion app transfers an existing Wallpaper Engine library to the Mac over local Wi-Fi with a 4-digit pairing code, no cloud upload, no account, and no repurchase.
