Fandom live wallpapers on a Mac, from Ghibli to Pokemon.

Short answer

Search for a live wallpaper of almost any franchise and the results split into two disappointing piles: phone apps, and Windows software. Apple's own wallpaper options, Dynamic Desktop and the aerial screen savers, contain no franchise content whatsoever, and they never have.

The animated fandom wallpapers people are actually picturing, a rain soaked castle, a character animated in the foreground, a slowly drifting starfield with a ship in it, are overwhelmingly fan made, and they are concentrated on the Wallpaper Engine Workshop on Steam. That storefront has never had an official Mac client (see whether Wallpaper Engine works on Mac).

Vivid Walls reads that same scene file format and plays it natively on macOS. So the practical answer to "can I get this on my Mac" is usually yes, with the honest caveat that the wallpaper comes from a community catalog rather than from us or from Apple.

How much is actually there, measured

Rather than assert that the catalog is large, here is a count. These are single word searches of the Wallpaper Engine Workshop, run on 1 September 2026, filtered to the ready to use items section:

A search count on its own is weak evidence, because a fuzzy search engine can pad a number with loosely related junk. So we checked: for each of those five searches we read the first page of results, thirty items, and counted how many were genuinely about that franchise. The answer was 29 or 30 out of 30 in every case. A deliberately nonsense search returned zero items, which is what makes a non zero count mean something. We did not inspect every item in a set of 13,012, and we are not going to imply we did.

Two franchises we deliberately left out of that table: multi word searches like Harry Potter or Taylor Swift return results that are ranked by relevance rather than matched strictly, so the totals they report are not a clean count of that franchise and we will not publish one. Those wallpapers do exist on the Workshop in quantity. We just cannot put an honest number on them with this method.

Movies, shows and games: Disney, Ghibli, Harry Potter, Pokemon, Marvel, Minecraft

This is the deepest part of the catalog by a wide margin. Long running franchises with a large fan art community, Pokemon, Minecraft, Marvel, Star Wars, Disney and the Studio Ghibli films, are represented by thousands of scenes each, and a good number of them are the layered scene type rather than a video loop, which is the version that actually moves in a considered way instead of looping a clip.

Scene type matters more than it sounds. A video loop is a clip playing behind your icons. A scene is built in layers, so the sky drifts at one speed, rain falls in front of it, and a character or a light flickers on its own timing. That is the difference between a desktop that looks alive and one that looks like a paused video.

Music artists and sport: Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, cricket and football

Thinner than the film and game categories, but real. Music artist wallpapers tend toward album art treatments and tour photography with subtle motion added, parallax on a still image, drifting light, animated typography. Sport is more regional: cricket wallpapers featuring individual players, football club crests and stadium scenes are all present, and the catalog reflects wherever the fan community is largest rather than any editorial decision.

For this category especially, the "bring your own" route below is often faster than hunting the Workshop, because a favorite piece of tour footage or a match highlight is usually already on your machine.

If your fandom is not there, use your own video

Vivid Walls plays ordinary video and GIF files as wallpaper directly, with no Workshop, no Steam and no Windows PC involved. A clip you already own becomes your desktop.

One practical warning that catches people out: when you import your own media, select the individual files rather than the folder they are sitting in. Dragging a folder in does not currently work, and the app does not tell you why. What we do not do, stated plainly

Vivid Walls does not create, curate, host, sell or license fandom artwork, and none of the wallpapers included with the app are fandom content. The eight animated wallpapers that ship with it are original and stock scenic pieces: a beach, a nebula, cherry blossom, a fireplace, a rainy street, a forest, an aurora and city lights.

What the app does is render a scene file that you already own. The Workshop is a community catalog rather than a curated store, so quality, origin and licensing vary from one item to the next, and some of it is not work safe. That is worth knowing before you go browsing, and it is the same caveat we would give about any user generated catalog.

Current limits

Scene format coverage is under active, ongoing work. The Workshop spans years of unusual and custom built scenes, and the more elaborate character scenes are among the harder ones to reproduce exactly, so a given wallpaper may not render perfectly yet. If a specific scene looks wrong, sending the Workshop link to support@vividwalls.app gets it looked at directly. Vivid Walls needs macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) or later and runs on Apple Silicon.
